What Are Steroids?

What Are Steroids?

Steroids are hormone-like substances that are made synthetically. Steroids are a type of drug that has strong anti-inflammatory effects. Steroids are often prescribed as life-saving drugs for people with respiratory problems, severe allergies, and other life-threatening illnesses. Doctors treat within certain time and dosages various skin diseases, arthritis, asthma, lung diseases, digestive system and some kidney problems by steroids. But there is a lot of misuse of this medicine in our country. Many people have been taking steroids for a long time without consulting a doctor because it's relieves pain, itching, and shortness of breath quickly.

Side Effects

Steroids are fast-acting and life-saving drugs, but steroids also have many side effects.

  • • Insomnia
  • • Gain weight
  • • Blurred vision
  • • Increased appetite
  • • Muscle weakness
  • • High blood pressure
  • • Cataracts in the eyes
  • • Sudden mood swings
  • • Abnormal growth of body hair
  • • Diabetes getting out of control
  • • Experiencing excruciating pain with minor injuries
Unnecessary steroids also cause ulcers, psychiatric problems, bone loss and muscle wasting, called Cushing's syndrome. But the most dangerous aspect is that long-term use of steroids disrupts the release of normal steroid hormones in the body. The patient becomes dependent on steroid drugs. The rule of thumb is, if the specific specialist doctor thinks it should be given on the basis of the test, then they will only give it. Most importantly, steroids cannot be given without testing.

Steroids Safety

Your body makes steroids naturally. The body produces extra steroids when your body is under stress, such as an infection or surgery. When using steroid tablets, sprays or creams, the body stops making its own steroids. If you take steroids separately for a long time, your body may not make enough steroids during times of stress. If this happens, more steroid medication may be required.

It can take a long time for the body to make steroids on its own when you stop taking steroids separately. There are a few ways to stop steroids safely. These things will help prevent steroid withdrawal symptoms.
    • • Do not take a double dose to make up a missed dose.
    • • Do not stop taking steroid medication without your doctor's advice.
    • • Do not take other steroids at the same time as steroids without first asking your doctor. This includes over-the-counter medications and other prescriptions.
    • • If you feel sick while tapering off steroids, consult your doctor immediately.
